A study published last week by the Journal of Addiction medicine found that there may be a link between excessive internet usage by teenagers and substance abuse. In a survey of Greek teens, those who used the internet the most intensely also were more likely to report drug abuse. Personal characteristics associated with both internet and substance abuse included: impulsiveness, recklessness, and aggressiveness.
While a relationship doesn’t mean that one causes the other, this finding does indicate that teens who are prone to one type of “addictive” behavior may be prone to others. Parents should be alert to teenagers who spend too much time online or who seem dependent upon the internet and social media for most of their interactions.
It’s all about balance in our lives. At Perry Wellness Center, we encourage face-to-face socializing and assist individuals in finding alternatives to addictive behaviors.
