Recently, Perry Wellness Center art instructor Phyllis Smith combined visual arts with music and the written word as the inspiration for an art project. She shared the song “I Believe I Can Fly” with a group of peers, and they discussed its meaning.
Miss Phyllis told the story of the Wright Brothers, who literally believed they could fly and continued to work toward that goal until they successfully built an airplane. Out of that discussion came the group project. Everyone’s ongoing participation would be needed until the project was completed. Specifically, each peer was asked to contribute at least one feather to the art project: a set of wings. Some peers were so enthusiastic that they contributed ten or more, even working on them at home. Then each peer was asked to have their picture taken wearing the wings.
The peers were happy to make these inspirational poses after they completed the project last Thursday. Aaliyah Smith provided great assistance with this project.
