For Southerners, there are two distinctive uses for fresh tomatoes: Ripe red tomatoes are used for tomato sandwiches, and green tomatoes are fried up and served hot.

Fried green tomatoes received national recognition in the 1987 novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, by Fannie Flagg. The movie was followed by the popular 1991 film, Fried Green Tomatoes.

Rudy’s Happy Patch Market is carrying on the Southern tradition with its display of Ricky Duke’s green tomatoes. They are a frequent purchase by local customers and area restaurants. 

Market manager Debbie Bissallion says, “I have prepared green tomatoes, but I try to avoid frying. My first try was still good!”

However you prepare them, hurry on down to pick up your green tomatoes before they sell out once more.
