All week, Perry Wellness Center has been sharing information and photos from some of our recent musical activities at the center. Music therapy has become a part of treatment and support programs throughout the nation, designed for individuals with mental health and substance abuse conditions.
We thought it might be helpful to share a handout from the American Music Therapy Association. It focuses on the benefits of music for individuals with mental illness or addictive diseases. We encourage supporters to read the entire article by clicking on the above link, as it could provide helpful information for families, educators, and church and community groups.
Even for organizations that do not provide formal music therapy, be aware that if you provide outreach for individuals with mental illness or substance abuse, incorporating music into a program can:
-- Improve emotional expression, group interactions, coping skills, and quality of life.
-- Decrease depression and anxiety and improve overall functioning.
-- Address issues related to loneliness, grief, loss, and stigma.
Above, a group of PWC peers who participate in musical activities is pictured. We're glad they are enjoying themselves!
