At a recent peer assembly at Perry Wellness Center, peer staff member John Mitchell delivered a “sit down” challenge to peers in the new classroom building: to develop their spiritual skills as part of their self-care.
John’s opening words included the following: “Spiritual skills are capacities relative to well-being, contentment, and success. These skills can enhance a person’s overall performance… They can also transform organizations through positive feelings like solidarity and joy.”
The spiritual skills discussed included:
Spiritual intelligence – allows individuals to behave with wisdom and compassion while maintaining inner and outer peace.
Core spiritual values – includes love, respect, joy, harmony, and humanity. Associated with a sense of connection and well-being.
Mindfulness and self-awareness – can lead to greater self-understanding and spiritual growth, through reflection on one’s thoughts, actions, and emotions.
Cultivation of positivity – focus on gratitude and positive aspects of life can enhance mental strength and well-being.
Inner peace and balance – balance in physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of one’s life can create a better foundation for kindness and resilience.
Compassion and empathy – development of these traits toward oneself and others are key spiritual practices.
Forgiveness – benefits spiritual growth and emotional healing.
After reviewing these skills, the class participated in follow-up discussion.
