Simply put, community care means looking out for one another. During Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, Mental Health America is joining with community partners to spread the message: The well-being of the individual is tied to the well-being of others. This concept has existed for generations in communities of color. It’s about connection, showing up for one another, and taking intentional action to help others.
Not everyone has equal access to employment, strong schools, safe living spaces, or quality healthcare. This is where community care can step in. It brings people together to share resources, offer support, and find new ways to care for each other in a welcoming environment. Such factors have been tied to improved recovery from mental health conditions, as well as an enhanced sense of purpose in caring for others.
As MHA states, “When we look out for each other, we all do better.”
