During the last week of June, customers can stop by Rudy’s Happy Patch market to purchase a copy of “Journey for Life,” the account of Stuart Perry’s 1999 mental health advocacy walk from Americus to Chicago.
At his destination, after wearing out countless pairs of walking shoes and meeting citizens and advocates along the way, Stuart presented the American Medical Association with a 10,000-signature petition calling for routine depression screenings.
Rudy Hayes, the former newspaper editor and mental health advocate for whom the Happy Patch market is named, accompanied Stuart on his 1,000-mile walk and documented the journey, both literal and symbolic.
As former First Lady Rosalynn Carter stated in the book’s forward, “Like the phoenix, the mythical bird that rose from its ashes to begin a new life, Stuart emerged from four years of devastating clinical depression to become one of America’s foremost advocates.”
In celebration of Perry Wellness Center’s Summer Festival, Rudy Hayes and his family (along with other local dignitaries) plan to join Stuart for a book signing at the market in July – we’ll announce that date as soon as it’s confirmed!
