What would the celebration of the Fourth of July be without an abundance of watermelons? These delicious melons appear on picnic tables each summer, joining grilled burgers and fresh corn for Independence Day cookouts.
Rudy’s Happy Patch Market always ensures that its stock of watermelons is in ready supply each summer. For the second consecutive year, an area farmer has greatly contributed to the available supply. David Burke, a busy farmer in Unadilla, Georgia, offers the market seedless, certified watermelons from his large crop.
Market manager Kelly Jansen notes, “We made six trips to his farm and hauled back over 8000 melons. I think we can please all of our customers!”
Perry Wellness Center founder and CEO Stuart Perry appreciates the contributions of local farmers, saying, We support our local farmers, and they respond when they can to provide their best produce to our market. To have support and belief in our program has been great.”
The only downside to this year’s delivery of 8000+ watermelons? Unloading them from the trailer on a hot June day, as Kelly and several volunteers found out. But the satisfaction comes from looking forward to brisk sales and a delicious slice of watermelon to come.
This week the Burke farm watermelons will go on sale for $1- $2 each. Hurry on down!
