At least every six months, each peer member of Perry Wellness Center meets with his or her counselor to plan goals for the future. One member, Darryl (DJ) Carter, recently achieved a major goal: high school graduation!
While DJ had completed his Performance Certificate and marched with his Class of 2009, he wanted to achieve his actual diploma. In order to do so, he must first pass the Georgia High School Writing Test, which is part of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT). While learning to better manage his mental health, DJ also worked on skills which would enable him to pass the test.
He recently learned that he had passed the writing test, and last week he received his formal diploma from Sumter County School Superintendent Donnie Smith. Accompanied by PWC staff, DJ visited Superintendent Smith at his office and personally received his diploma. As it turned out, DJ also recognized the superintendent as his former elementary school principal.
Stuart Perry said of his accomplishment, "I am so proud of DJ. To attain this goal is important to him, his family, and the center. "
Having completed his top goal on his recovery plan, Darryl is now ready to tackle his next goal: obtaining his drivers' license. We know he'll be just as successful in this next task!
