But consider that an opportunity to enjoy a particular Southern delicacy: fried green tomatoes! At Rudy’s Happy Patch Market, several displays of green tomatoes are ready for customer selection.


“I like fried green tomatoes and tomato pickles,” notes Perry Wellness Center founder and CEO Stuart Perry. He recently sought out a list of ingredients for his favorite recipe for fried green tomatoes, in order to share with customers and readers.

Fried Green Tomatoes

    •       3 medium-sized, firm green tomatoes
    •       Dash of kosher salt
    •       1 cup all-purpose flour
    •       1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
    •       ½ cup milk or buttermilk
    •       1 large egg, beaten
    •      1/3 cup fine white cornmeal
    •       ½ cup fine dry bread crumbs
    •       ¼ cup peanut, canola, or olive oil

Cut tomatoes horizontally into ¼- to ½-inch slices.

Mix the salt, flour, and Cajun seasoning together. Dip the tomato slices into the mixture.

Lightly beat the egg. Dip the tomato slices into the egg mixture.

Mix the cornmeal and bread crumbs together. Dip the tomato slices into the mixture.

Fry the slices in vegetable oil until golden-brown and crisp, at around 375 degrees F.
