Recently, a very special event was held at the Georgia Southwestern State University Storm Dome here in Americus. The GSW Nursing Department hosted a Mental Health Fair under the Dome’s “big top.” Designed to promote greater awareness of mental illness and wellness, the event was hosted by nursing students in mental health and community health classes, along with representatives from the Office of Student Health, Counseling Services, and Care@GSW. The event was coordinated by GSW's Natasha Snider.
Perry Wellness Center loaded its vans to capacity for the event. Participants had the opportunity to visit information booths, listen to relevant speakers, participate in a cake walk, play games, and win prizes.
Prior to the health fair, an evening with guest mental health speakers was scheduled. They included Sarah Holiday, a domestic violence survivor, author, and speaker; Richard Lamphier, Executive Director of the Georgia Nurses Association Peer Assistance Program; and our own Stuart Perry, founder and director of Perry Wellness Center. Each of them shared their personal stories and resources.
In addition to sharing his personal story of recovery, Stuart introduced several peers to participants. A highlight of the event was the showing of a national media film on Stuart Perry’s well-known “Journey for Life.” The film documented the 1,000-mile walk by Stuart and other mental health advocates on behalf of medical screening for depression. Thousands of signatures were gathered for presentation to the American Medical Association.
“I was not aware of this film before,” Stuart explained, “But I was thrilled to present it for this event.” He looks forward to posting the information on the Perry Wellness Center website in the future (perrywellnesscenter.com).
“I was excited with the acceptance at the event and look forward to making information accessible to other mental health advocates,” a smiling Stuart Perry concluded.
