Self esteem collageDid you know that there is a commemorative day, week, or month to celebrate almost any aspect of mental health and recovery? For example, February is International Boost Your Self Esteem Month! In many countries and throughout the U.S., many organizations celebrate the importance of building strong self-esteem and confidence in order to live one’s best life.

This month, Perry Wellness Center will be sharing strategies for building self-esteem as part of a mentally healthy life. Following are a few simple tips for boosting your own feelings of self-worth and confidence:

Be gentle with yourself
. We are often our worst critics. Use kindness and compassion in place of constant self-criticism.

Practice self-care
. Work activities into your schedule that will feed both your body and soul, whether that be meditation, daily exercise, creative expression, or relaxing with a good book or favorite music.

Set realistic personal goals
. Set goals that may stretch you, but are achievable. Celebrate even the smallest success. Learn constantly and develop new skills.

Re-frame negative thoughts
. Challenge your negative thoughts – particularly about yourself, and substitute affirmations about your abilities and potential.

Seek healthy support from others
. Family, friends, therapists, spiritual advisers, and support groups can often provide helpful support. You are in charge of yourself, but celebrate community.

Check back during February to discover additional tips, facts, and resources on building self-esteem.
