A Death in the Family
The staff and peers of Perry Wellness Center were saddened today to learn of the death of Mr. Rudy Hayes, long-time supporter and friend. Rudy's Happy Patch Market is named for this gentleman, and his history with Stuart Perry goes back decades.
Rudy Hayes helped organize and document the Journey for Life which Stuart undertook in 1999 as a mental health advocacy walk from Americus, Georgia to Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Rudy was there every step of the way, and he later captured the story of this remarkable journey in a book, "Stuart Perry's Journey for Life."
In his professional career, Mr. Rudy was a journalist and served as the editor of the Americus Times-Recorder for many years. He was also a tireless mental health advocate. In addition to his work with Stuart Perry, he served for several years on the board of Middle Flint Behavioral HealthCare.
In recent years, his health failed him, but he still dropped by Perry Wellness Center on occasion, along with his wife Charlene. In addition to all of us at the center, he is mourned by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
We will miss you, Rudy. Godspeed!
