US FoodsPerry Wellness Center’s culinary services manager recently attended a very special event. Kelly Jansen was invited by local U.S. Foods territory manager Mark Barrett to the company’s Spring Scoop Showcase in Warner Robins, GA. Accompanied by Mulkey McMichael the group enjoyed four hours of immersion in the world of food preparation and service.

Approximately 200 area company representatives were invited to the event, held at Rigsby’s Entertainment Center. Each invitee was in for an enjoyable experience, beginning with a welcome by a U.S. Foods manager or staff member at the entry to the center.

“I had a chance to put a face with a name at this show,” Kelly enthused. “U.S. Foods is holding regional showcases to allow more vendors to attend. We were the only company representing mental health services, and these people were eager to talk with me about our program.”

Soon after his arrival, Kelly met with top management representatives, and their discussion soon led to the topic of nutrition for individuals with mental illness. Jansen shared his research about the most suitable foods that can provide a wholesome and safe dining experience for Perry Wellness Center clients. His research includes ways to address allergies and interactions with certain medications.

“With our W.H.A.M. (Whole Health Action Management) program, we research foods to help in weight loss as we work to fight diabetes, obesity, and other personal health problems,” Kelly explained. “The removal of salt from our food preparation caused some early concerns, “he recalled with a smile. “Now, all is good as we continue with salt-free cooking.”

U.S. Foods has vowed to increase its food offerings for better health. At the food show, there were tables of unique salads, yogurt flavors, and fresh fruit drinks. The show also offered a variety of foods that were available for different levels of food service budgets. The second floor galleries at the Rigsby’s Center were filled with cooks, staff, and leadership who could respond to most inquiries about the company’s current and future product offerings. For a food services manager, it was sheer heaven!
